Knock 'em for ten with bowling tips

Everyone knows the aim of the game in bowling is obviously to knock down the pins. But what happens if your ball prefers to avoid them and instead races straight for the gutter? hollywood bowl has come to the rescue with monthly top tips, which will help you improve your technique.

Tip 1 – Choose your weapon!
It may sound obvious but you need to make sure you’re using the right tools for the job. Many people just go and pick up any old house ball in the racks that isn’t being used, and don’t consider whether it’s the correct weight or size for them.

Mark Harvey, Ten Pin Bowling Coach, recommends the ‘Goldilocks’ method - some will be too heavy, some will be too light but you must find one that is just right.

As well as considering the weight of the ball, the size of the finger and thumb holes should also be tested.

1. The weight
At hollywood bowl the balls are colour coded by weight and there is a chart near the ball racks to tell you which colour is which weight. If you're not sure, ask a member of staff. The best weight for you is the heaviest you can manage but don’t show off by picking the heaviest there is. You will be using it for ten frames per game with up to two balls per frame so you will have to swing it a lot!

2. The finger and thumb holes
The most important is the thumb hole as the thumb controls the ball. It should not be a sloppy fit but a loose fit is better than too tight a fit - you don't want the ball to stay on your hand and take you down the lane! With your thumb in the ball, lay your hand flat across the finger holes with the middle and ring fingers across the finger holes. For a conventional grip the crease of your second knuckle (closest to your palm) should be about halfway across the holes. Once you have found a ball that fits as well as you can, you should make a note of it. All new balls, and most older ones, have a serial number etched into them. Then get to the centre with enough time before bowling to find ‘your’ ball before you bowl and then go and get those strikes.
